Camp Gilead’s Spring Hymn Sing * A Time of Worship & Reminiscing
It was a picture perfect spring day at Camp Gilead in Carnation, on the morning of April 24th. Vans and carloads began to arrive for the bi-annual Camp Gilead Hymn Sing led by Pastor Tom Ruhlman of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Shoreline WA with his daughter, Kimberly (Ruhlman) Mallory, program director at Camp Gilead, on the piano.
Pastor Tom has led the Hymn Sing since 2005 and has managed to continue to uncover “new” hymns that may have been left out of most church’s Sunday morning worship set, but came quickly to the lips of those in attendance at the Hymn Sing.
People came from all over the Pacific Northwest to attend the Hymn Sing. There were folks from Puyallup, Tacoma, Arlington, Shoreline, Bellevue, Sammamish, Kirkland, Seattle, even some visitors from Illinois, Texas and California! Pastor Tom had prepared over an hour of songs that included titles such as; I Have the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, A New Name in Glory, Every Day With Jesus, It is Glory Just to Walk with Him, On the Jericho Road, Cleansing Wave, When Love Shines In, He Will Hold Me Fast, The Old Fashioned Way, Tell Mother I’ll Be There, Are We Downhearted?, My Hope Is in the Lord & I’ll Fly Away.
There were smiles, laughter, tears, words of encouragement & admonishment, and Scriptures read. Following the hour and a half of singing, the rain held out just long enough to walk to the Dining Hall. Those that needed assistance got a luxurious ride in a camp golf cart by camp staff Jack Moyer & Josh Mallory. The lunch menu included delicious Baked Potato Soup with Croissant Sandwiches & Cranberry Chocolate Chip cookies. The food was prepared by camp cook, Stephanie Bird.
The next Hymn Sing at Camp Gilead is planned for the Fall of 2014. Pastors are encouraged to bring a vanload! It is worth the drive and the fellowship is sweet. For more information, please visit www.campgilead.org
